Day Camp Program at Camp Broadstone General
Camp Broadstone's Summer Enrichment Program for Academically Gifted Youth is adding a Day Camp to its well-established Residential Camp. The Day Camp will serve local 4th through 6th grade academically gifted youth with 6 one-week sessions. Sessions run from Monday to Friday with campers arriving at 8:30 a.m. and returning home at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $250 per session, and campers are welcome to register for more than one session. The Day Camp sessions will have themes such as Exploring Science, Appalachian Heritage, Outdoor Living Skills and more! The Southern Appalachian Historical Association is happy to announce the dates for the 57 season of the local outdoor drama, Horn in the West. The show will run from June 20 - August 16, 2008 Tuesday - Sunday, with curtain time at 8PM.

Summer Art Classes for Kids at the Old Mabel School Mabel Elementary School

Summer is a great time for fun and learning.  Please join NC and TN certified art teacher, Melissa Jaroszewski for hands on art lessons for children ages 3 and up at the Old Mabel School in Zionville, NC.  Each lesson is designed to build age appropriate skills and to enhance creativity. Children will be excited to explore different art mediums while creating their own works of art such as origami, anime, color-wheels, bookbinding, plaster casting and clay sculptures. All 3, 4 and 5 year olds must be accompanied by an adult.

Classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday in June and July. 

Class times are:

3 years and up 9:00-10:00

6 years and up 10:30-11:30

8 and 10 years and up 5:30-7:00

Saturday Creative Time will be held the second and forth Saturday in June and July from 9:00 to 11:00.  This is available to all ages for a themed free time to explore creativity while using different art materials.

 

All Tuesday and Thursday classes need registration.  You can go online to register and view a complete class schedule at www.summerartclasses.webs.com or call 828-406-2050.  Registration deadlines are on Thursday of the week before each class is held, but late registration is available.  Payment is due at the beginning of class or you can prepay. Community Worship Services Begin This Sunday, July 6, at
"Horn In The West" Amphitheatre

     A Series of Worship Services for the entire community will begin this Sunday, July 6, 2008, in the Amphitheatre of "Horn In The West." The services are sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Boone and will feature a variety of churches, speakers, and singers throughout July and August.
     The services will be held from 8:45 am until 9:30 am each Sunday morning in July and August and are open to everyone. Light refreshments will be served prior to and following the services. The Mountaineer Ruritan Club will hold its monthly Fish Fry Friday this Friday, July 11, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in downtown Sugar Grove. It features all you can eat fish, chicken, fries, hush puppies, coleslaw and drink for $8. The public is invited. The fish fries are held the second Friday of every month through the Fall.

Watauga Humane Society Sponsors Pet Photo Contest General

The Watauga Humane Society announces a special pet photo contest. This year we will honor a “Canine King and Queen,” in addition to a “Feline King and Queen” at the 11th Annual Fur Ball on August 23. Deadline for photos is midnight on August 8. 

 

 

Anyone may enter by mailing an animal photo along with a $10 donation per each entry.  Any photo including people will be disqualified.  Only one photo per animal accepted. Winners need not be present at the Fur Ball to win.

Watauga Arts Council August Gallery Exhibits Jones House Community & Cultural Center

The Watauga Arts Council’s August gallery exhibits in the downtown Boone Jones House Community Center during August feature the High Country Watermedia Annual Juried Exhibit in the Mazie Jones Gallery with twenty-some artists works in a variety of water media and Derfla, a self-taught oil painter with a show titled “child of the echo verse.”

 

These exhibits are on display from Tuesday,  July 29 until Friday, August 29 from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays. The  Arts Council galleries are also open Thursdays from 7:30 to 11 p.m. during the acoustic jams at the Jones House and Friday evenings during the Concerts on the Lawn.

 

The gallery reception to welcome these exhibits is Friday, August 1 from 6:30-8 p.m. and is held in conjunction with downtown Boone’s First Friday Art Crawl. Free food and beverage will be served and the public is invited.

GOP FAMILY DAY Brookshire Park

It's time to get ALL REPUBLICANS in the county organized, have some fun

and start the ball rolling towards putting McCain in the White House and our

NC Republicans in office.  On Saturday, August 2nd between 11:00 a.m.

and 3:00 p.m., Watauga County Republican families are gathering at Brookshire Park.   Hamburgers, hot dogs, watermelon and drinks will be available (adults $10.00, kids, 6-12 $5.00 pays for food and helps finance the fall campaign). 

 

Brookshire Park is located just off Hwy 421 about 1.1 miles beyond New Market on the left just before the intersection with Bamboo Road.  Look for the sign and balloons.  If you need more information, contact Jim Goff at 264-8569 or Jim Hastings at 264-7115.

Now in its second year, the Playhouse Family Music Festival, the most family friendly festival of the summer, will return to Sugar Grove in August with nationally-acclaimed children’s music performer Billy Jonas, rising “kid hop” star Secret Agent 23 Skidoo as well as local favorites the Lost Ridge Band and the Forget-Me-Nots.
